What is panic disorder?

Panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder that causes unexpected, frequent panic attacks. Panic attacks cause an extreme and sudden wave of paralyzing fear. People can have panic attacks and not have panic disorder.

With panic disorder, panic attacks are frequent and disruptive to daily life. If you have panic disorder, you may constantly worry about your next panic attack, avoiding places or situations you fear may trigger it.

Researchers theorize that panic disorder may develop because of an overreaction by your body’s survival instincts — fight or flight.

What are the symptoms of panic disorder?

You can have panic disorder with other types of anxiety disorders. People with panic disorder have a history of four or more panic attacks that make them constantly worry about their next attack.

Symptoms of panic disorder include:

  • Overwhelming sense of fear or doom
  • Loss of control
  • Trembling
  • Heart palpitations
  • Sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling disconnected to yourself
  • Chest pain

These panic attacks occur without warning and last a few minutes or more than an hour.
